International Biomedical Laboratory Science Day

Sustainable Testing and Sustainable Workforce

Today, we proudly join our colleagues worldwide in marking the International Day of Biomedical Laboratory Scientists – a powerful reminder of the essential, often unseen role we play at the heart of healthcare.

Here in Malta, Biomedical Scientists continue to serve at the heart of our healthcare system, ensuring accurate, timely, and high-quality diagnostic testing across the various specialities of laboratory medicine. The resilience of our profession was truly tested during the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating our remarkable ability to adapt swiftly and respond effectively to a global public health crisis. However, our resiliency continues to be tested daily as we seek to provide the best level of laboratory testing to our patients while adapting to the ever-increasing needs of a modern healthcare system.

This year’s theme, Sustainable Testing and Sustainable Workforce, reminds us of the urgent need to safeguard the future of our profession. Biomedical scientists have a central role to play to ensure that laboratory resources are used wisely by adopting procurement practices that not only reduce waste and environmental impact but also maintain the highest standards of patient care. Sustainability goes beyond the environment, as it also ensures that Biomedical Scientists are supported, valued, and retained so we can continue to provide safe, effective, and innovative laboratory services for generations to come.

As President of the Malta Association of Biomedical Scientists, I invite on all stakeholders to:

  • Invest in the education, training, and development of Biomedical Scientists

  • Prioritise workforce planning to address shortages and burnout

  • Recognise the critical role of laboratory medicine in delivering sustainable healthcare

Let us together build a future where both our testing and our workers are resilient, empowered, and equipped to meet tomorrow’s challenges.

To all Biomedical Scientists in Malta and around the world – your dedication, expertise, and professionalism are deeply appreciated. Thank you.
